Dressing Myself
Learning to dress independently is an important life skill. Not only does it give the child a sense of achievement to master a new skill but also allows the parent a few precious minutes first thing in the morning! It will really help your child if they can get their coat and shoes on by themselves before they start school.
Dressing is a complex task requiring the ability to use both hands together, awareness of body parts, good balance, organisation and concentration. Many children have difficulties with one or more of these areas.
Be aware of your child’s developmental age so that you can have realistic expectations. A child can take their socks off at a young age, however, they will be a lot older before they manage to independently put on a shirt and do up the buttons.
