Welcome to the self-help skills toolkit! Within this section you will find advice, resources and strategies to try with your child to support them to learn skills to enable them to look after themselves as they progress into adulthood. Learning to wash, dress, eat and toilet independently are important milestones in a child’s development.
As your child grows and starts becoming ready to do more things for themselves, you as parents need to teach them how to do this in the best way. This may be from them watching you, doing the task together and by giving them instructions and time to practice.
We know this can be frustrating and time consuming but we know we need to do it in order for your child to achieve independence.
> As tempting as it is don’t take over
> Break the task down into manageable chunks. This may need to be very small steps to start such as just pulling up their coat zip, or flushing the chain after you have helped them go to the toilet
> There are different ways to learn; show your child, talk though the stages etc.
> Practice little and often e.g. daily for 5 minutes
> Problem solve together – don’t correct them if they make a mistake but ask them what they need to do to fix it
> Practice when you have time i.e. weekends or evenings
