SELF HELP SKILLS

—
Some children may require additional support and practice in order to improve independence and safety when completing functional skills in the home.
Our toolkit pages have been designed to support families, carers and professionals who have concerns about a child’s ability to participate in everyday tasks (occupations) and focuses on the functional difficulties that fall within Occupational Therapy.
The areas of concern can be grouped into three broad occupations for children and young people. They are: self-help skills, play and leisure skills and nursery/school skills.
Within each section you will find specific activities and strategies to try with your child regarding the functional difficulty you have identified which may also improve their safety at home.
A number of children and young people will show difficulties at some point in their development, but most will progress without the need for occupational therapy. Those children often benefit from the use of simple strategies being completed on a regular and frequent basis, for example 3 times a week lasting 15 minutes. It is therefore important to record all the activities you have completed within this toolkit to help you establish the strategies that work best for your child.
