Using tools - hints & tips
When learning a new skill, it is important to consider the following:
- Create the ‘just right challenge’ and try to work on one goal at a time so as not to
overwhelm yourself/child - Remember to break the task down into smaller parts so that it is more achievable and allows
your child more chance of being successful - Think about the environment and how it can be adapted to make it easier for your child, for
example, sitting down with feet supported when completing a table top activity - Be patient – use verbal prompting, demonstration or a hands-on approach to help your child
feel the movements required for the task - Reward and praise your child, even for small successes
- If your child is struggling, it can be tempting to take over – don’t! Give your child time to
work it out for themselves and give loads of encouragement. If necessary, talk them through
what to do and only step in if they get really stuck - Repetition and practice are key
- And finally make it FUN!!
