Changes to how you access early years speech and language support
We’re making it easier for families to access Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) support for young children in Devon and Torbay.
From 6 April 2026, you will no longer need a referral for children aged 0 to school entry (Year R). Instead, you can attend one of our Easy Access drop-in sessions in your local area.
These sessions will be held in community venues such as children’s centres, family hubs and clinics, giving you quicker and more flexible access to advice and support.
This new approach helps reduce waiting times and ensures families can get help at the right time.
Some specialist services will continue to use referral routes, including support for feeding and swallowing, cleft lip and palate, and significant hearing loss.
