Mental health support available in 100% of schools by 2029
An award-winning mental health support programme is being rolled out to all schools and colleges across Devon within the next four years. This expansion is part of government plans to prioritise mental health prevention and early intervention in education, ensuring that every student has accessible mental health support.
By 2029, primary, secondary and colleges across the county will be equipped with dedicated mental health practitioners on site in all schools through The Mental Health Support Team in schools (MHST). Schools will also have access to training, consultations, digital mental health tools as well as access to a network of trained professionals to provide both preventative and responsive services. This comprehensive approach aims to create a supportive, safe, and inclusive environment for all students to thrive both academically and emotionally.
Holly Billington, Service Lead for MHST said: “By ensuring mental health support is available in every school, we are taking a monumental step toward building a healthier and more resilient future for children and young people. We recognise that good mental health is just as important as physical health, and this initiative empowers children and young people with the tools and guidance they need to succeed in all areas of life.”
The program has already seen success in close to 70% of schools across the county and will be rolled out progressively over the next four years. Local educators are embracing the initiative as a crucial element in shaping positive school environments.
Claire Hulbert, Head of school at Axminister Community Primary School said: “The work we have done with MHST has been absolutely life changing for our school. Decider Skills, Timid to Tiger Parenting and the one to one work has made a huge difference. We have been able to actively support more than 50 families in the past two years and that difference has really changed our children’s lives.
MHST is committed to providing ongoing training for teachers, staff, and school leaders to ensure they are equipped to address mental health challenges effectively. This ambitious effort aligns with CFHD’s goal of reducing stigma around mental health and promoting overall wellbeing in school communities.
