How does Lumi Nova work?
Lumi Nova is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT which is a type of therapy that helps change unhelpful ways of thinking or behaving.
The game starts with story-based Psychoeducation, providing a non-stigmatising way to learn what fears and worries are, and normalise them. Children are able to choose the mission they would like to work on based on common worries for 7-12 years olds.
The full list of missions is available here. Within Lumi Nova these ‘big worries’ are broken down into small challenges so children face their fear one step at a time using exposure therapy.
The practice of exposing oneself to a feared situation helps children learn that the feared outcome might not happen and if it does they are able to cope.
Exposures get more difficult as children progress through the game building confidence and resilience. Challenges progress from in-app activities (drawing, viewing photos, or 360-degree videos) real-life challenges that apply what they practiced.
Lumi Nova guides children to consider their feelings before and after each challenge. After each challenge they are rewarded with costumes and gameplay based around an intergalactic adventure.
