Dear Younger Me
This month, we caught up with Alice, Assistant Psychologist within the Exeter and East Mood, Emotions and Relationships (MERs) team who has written a letter to her younger self ahead of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
Dear Younger Me,
I know things feel heavy sometimes, and it’s okay to not have all the answers right now. You don’t always have to be strong—your feelings are valid, even the ones that scare or confuse you. It’s okay to ask for help, to take a break, and to breathe. You are more resilient than you realize, and you are worthy of love, care, and kindness—especially from yourself.
It’s your first time doing this thing called life. You are figuring out what you love, who you are, and how you want to show up in the world—how exciting! As you get older, you will discover even more things that bring you fulfillment and joy. Even though you might not feel it now, you will visit amazing places and meet incredible people you don’t know yet creating wonderful memories.
There will be times when things feel impossible, but it will get better. One day, you will see that the storms you’re facing now are shaping a stronger, wiser version of you. Be gentle with yourself. Celebrate the small victories, and remember: it’s okay to not be okay. And to be honest with others about this. You are enough, exactly as you are. You should be so proud of getting here and being where you are right now.
With love and patience,
Your Future Self
