Christmas Hamper Project returns for seventh year to support young people and care leavers across Devon and Torbay
The Christmas Hamper Project will return for its seventh year, bringing warmth, comfort and practical support to young people and care leavers across Devon and Torbay who may otherwise go without this Christmas.
Led by Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) and supported by Devon Partnership NHS Trusts’ charity, Open Up, the project began in 2020 as a simple act of kindness during a time of uncertainty. It has since grown into a much-valued annual tradition, reaching more young people each year and offering a powerful reminder that they are seen, valued and cared for.
In 2025, 250 Christmas hampers were delivered to young people facing difficult circumstances. Hampers included practical essentials such as toiletries, warm clothing and blankets, alongside festive treats. Supporters also raised more than £2,100 through JustGiving, alongside generous contributions from local businesses and community partners.
The aim for 2026 is to reach even more young people and care leavers across Devon and Torbay, providing support at Christmas when it is needed most
The impact of the project goes beyond the contents of each hamper. Young people have shared how much the support means to them, from children wearing their new winter hats every day to families valuing items that bring comfort and a sense of normality during the festive season.
Jade Simmons, Clinical Team Manager for Children in Care and Care Experienced Adults, said, “Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for young people who may be experiencing uncertainty, isolation or financial pressures. For the last six years, the Christmas Hamper Project has been a simple but meaningful way of showing young people and care leavers that their community is thinking about them. Every donation, however big or small, can make a real difference.”
Daniel Robson, Head of charity Open Up, said, “What started as a small act of kindness has become an important annual tradition. We see first-hand how much these thoughtful gifts can mean to young people, particularly those who may be spending Christmas without family around them. The generosity of local people and businesses makes this possible, and we hope even more people will support the campaign this year.”
